2- Luminaire spec and visual check
When light uniformity (Uo) at task area is < 0.6 (minimum), students experience shadows and contrasts which can be disturbing during class or exam.
The shadows shown here in this empty room will also appear on room occupants' faces.
When unified glare rating (UGR) of luminaire is >19 (maximum), students experience lighting as uncomfortable. This can cause eyestrain.
Image shows both glare and shadows caused by mounted fluorescent fixtures.
Same classroom with improved uniformity.
