About light meter

Accuracy

Standard DIN 5032 /7 (“Light Measurement Classifications for illuminance and brightness measurement instruments”) recognizes four classes of light meters based on their accuracy (not connected to the prices of the professional light sensors):

  • class L: devices with highest accuracy - needed only in laboratories
  • class A: devices with high precision
  • class B: devices with a medium accuracy
  • class C: devices with low accuracy

We recommend to take this standard as authority on light meter classification.

Smartphone app as light meter

  • These can not be trusted because the measuring results are to different.
  • There is no official statement, however Philips Lighting Specialist have done research. Our strong recommendation is not to trust smart phone apps. The results are too inconsistent between different apps and different smart phones.
